If i shut the switch off to a post light in front yard is it ok to change light unit and wiring at the post?

If the switch is off, there is no power to the light, therefore no power in the wires.

nooooooooo noooooooooooooooo ur going to die

no kill the power to that switch
Yes-because you shut off the power to the light pole.Just make sure everyone knows what you are doing so someone doesn't accidentally flip the switch.Or better yet, tape the switch %26quot;off%26quot; so that doesn't happen.
No.

Shut the breaker off from the electrical panel. Try the light switch to make sure that indeed the light is connected to the breaker.

You don't want to risk a faulty switch or anything. Electricity can easily kill you.

Also, never touch the inside of the electrical panel where the breakers are. Doing so could kill you and blow you across the room.
it's better to kill the power at the breaker, although if the

switch isn't defective it would be ok. Whether you use

the breaker or the switch, tape it down or leave a note

so someone don't turn it on behind you.
IF the light was wired correctly, you should be okay. As noted, better to turn off the circuit at your main breaker panel. After securing power, check for voltage with a voltmeter before beginning work.
No, you need to go to the breaker box and shut the switch off that has that light on it. Then it is safe to any type of wiring or replacing the light.
Probably because most switches break the hot line. However, rarely (and I've 'found' it before) the switch can work by breaking the neutral, return, loop. An inexpensive voltage tester held in or near the light socket will tell you if there is current to the fixture. But...

TURN OFF THE BEAKER, ITS THE ONLY WAY TO BE SURE.
Be safe kill the breaker or you may end up killing yourself.

The light may have been wired incorrectly to begin with.

If the polarity is reversed you are only disrupting the flow in the common wire. The hot wire could still be live even though the light is out.
well thats still taking a chance that the wiring is okay first of all and that nothing is being thru fed at that location. electricity is like a gun - its always loaded - always hot. Err on the side of caution please and just turn off the breaker if you insist on doing your own electrical work.
Many good answers. Always turn off the entire circuit to be safe. Don't rely on the switch.
NO you must isolate it at the mains first if you are going to work on the wiring. and make sure that no one switches it back on until you have finished.
