I have a light that turns on the basement light. I'd like to update it.?

I'd like to change that light switch to add a second light on the stairs that will operate separately from the basement light. What do I do with the wiring?

Well, you probably have a couple of options here. If you have space were the first light switch is you can get a two gang cut in box, cut out the drywall, pull out the single gang and use on for the old switch and one for the new one. And while you have the whole in your wall you will need to run a wire from there two your new light. Or if you cant fit a two gang box you can get a double switch. This is assuming that there is a neutral and hot in that switch box if there isn't than you would have to run a wire from the old light box to the new light box, than another wire down to your new switch.

Or if it works out you could use the light switch on top of the stairs for the new stair light and add a switch on the bottom of the stairs for the basement. These are just ideas it is hard to explain installs like this with out seeing what you are trying to do.

If you are not familiar with electrical work you probably should call in the pros. Because if you do not have the right tools for fishing the wall and testing the circuits it could get messy and dangerous

good luck

It depends what is in the switch box now. If there is two cables with the whites joined, and one of then is the continuous power cable, then you can use that cable to supply the switch.

If there is no continuous power/neutral cable in that box, you will need to get power for the added light from the basement light somehow, likely by replacing the cable going to the basement lights with a 3-wire one.
Hire an electrician.
