Elecric light glows when I switch on another light even though its not been put on?

I have installed 2 down lights that change colour and taken the main feed from another light rose However when I switch the coloured Lights on the ordinary light which I have taken the main feed from the ordinary bulb glows Dimly any suggestion what i may have done wrong?I have connected the two coloured light wiring which is Twin and earth lighting cable to a 20 amp J Box I have put the two brown live together on one terminal in jBox and 2 blue neutral together on another terminal in the jBox the switch cable the brown has gone to the Brown terminal and the blue neutral gone to a seperate terminal where I have put the Brown from the Live feed and put a red tape on the Blue showing it Now a Live so in all there are 3 brown wires on the brown terminal three Blue on the neutral terminal a brown and Blue on the seperate terminal in the junction box any suggestions what I have done wrong ?

Sounds like it's wired in series..

Where is the abs switch located on 1998 Dodge Durango been told that they why the abs light stays on?

where is the abs switch located on 1998 Dodge Durango been told that they why the abs light stays on, is it easy to get to and change yourself
Where is the abs switch located on 1998 Dodge Durango been told that they why the abs light stays on?
there is no abs switch. the light could be on for a sensor problem, pump motor, any of the solenoids, or for a loss of brake pressure. there is a switch on the proportioning valve that senses pressure drop if you have a leak. make sure your fluid is full, and go get it scanned to see why the light is on.
Where is the abs switch located on 1998 Dodge Durango been told that they why the abs light stays on?
It is a junction block in the frame above the rear axle, and unless you know how to bleed the brakes, you should take it to someone who does. This is the worst abs system out there.
the abs light is probably on because it has a bad wheel speed sensor. 90% of the time that is the cause. i would get it checked before you start throwing parts at it. auto zone will scan for free and you will have a better idea of what your looking for.
the light is on because of a bad sensor probably ,have the computer scanned on it to see if that's actually whats causing it,that will make the abs light stay on,good luck.lol

  • How to connect the dining room chandelier to a wall light switch?

I live in a 1956 house and started renovating my dining room. I wanted to change the chandelier and found a problem: there is one light switch on the wall and it controls an electrical outlet, not the chandelier. The old chandelier had a on/off switch on it. The new chandelier doesn't have this switch. When I unscrewed the outlet on the wall that is controlled by the light switch, I found a black and white wire that are tied together and tucked in behind the receptacle. Is it possible that those wires control the chandelier? How should I connect them to be able to operate the ceiling light with the wall light switch?
How to connect the dining room chandelier to a wall light switch?
I suggest you call an Electrician. But, if you must do it yourself, please do some on-line research and obtain more information before you do this. Shut off power and be careful.
How to connect the dining room chandelier to a wall light switch?
First you need to find out where the wire to the light fixture is getting its power (by going in attic and tracing it) Then remove the black (light fixture power supply) lead where it is getting its power from and connect that(black) lead to the switch(either at the outlet or switch) If you splice it then make sure your splice is in a covered metal junction box,and you use wire nuts.If what I said is in anyway confusing then call an electrician (this winter since the attic will be stifling)

Light doesn't want to turn on.?

Recently the light in our laundry room has nor wanted to turn on. At first we assumed the bulb just died, but after replacing the bulb the problem wasn't fixed. After that we changed the light switch that too had no effect. Then we changed the light fixture thinking that was the problem. But, despite our hopes, still does not want to work. Before calling an electrician, i was wondering if anyone has ideas.
Light doesn't want to turn on.?
Depending on how the house was wired, matters which wire(black or white)is power or ground.Usually the power is sent directly to the light and the switch controls the ground. The bare wire or green wire grounds the switch, light or outlet to the main fuse box.

With a volt-meter,take the light fixture out,set the meter to 400 ac,check the black wire for voltage with the red lead and connect the black lead to the round hole in a wall outlet to get your ground. If no voltage, try the white wire for voltage. If still no voltage,I think your light doesn't work on the same power circuit you think works with other things in the house.

If you don't have access to a volt-meter,go to Home Depot or any hardware store and they have a small test light with two wires that usually handles up to 600 volts.Ask if they have some type of extentions you could add to reach the long distance between the light fixture and the wall outlet.
Light doesn't want to turn on.?
well theres the fuse box fuse switch and the outlet and wall switch only thing left is wiring
    check the fuse man,,

    did you check all the fuse's are working;;

Is there an inexpensive way change which wall outlet is turned on by the wall switch?

I have a light switch that is connected to an electrical outlet on the west side of the room. The problem is that I need the light on the east side of the room. It would be unsightly and unsafe to run an extension cord across the room because it would cross a doorway. Any suggestions? Some sort of infrared switch or something conencted to the lamp perhaps? Is there such a thing?
Is there an inexpensive way change which wall outlet is turned on by the wall switch?
Hi, i ran into this similar problem at an older house which i did not want to destroy the walls, so check this site out http://www.prestostore.com/cgi-bin/pro17鈥?/a>
Is there an inexpensive way change which wall outlet is turned on by the wall switch?
Go to the room above the west side wall and turn off electricity. Lift the floorboards to gain access. Remove light fitting from west wall, then withdraw the cable into the floor space. Use a junction box and extend the light cable so it will reach the east wall and then complete the task by wiring the light in its new location at the end of its extended cable.
You may be in luck if the light switch only controls either the top or the bottom outlet in the duplex outlet. Check it and if this is the case, shut the electricity to the outlet and reome the wires from the one that is controlled by the switch, then coneect it to the other recepticle's screws. Be sure to cap the ones that you diconnected.
You don't say if this is a two story house or single and, if you have a basement. A basement, no problem. Run the wires under the rafters and up the wall with a mouse.

If it's a single story, run the wires from the wall down, from the attic. Otherwise your going to have to run them across the floor and put a carpet over it, across the doorway.
Are you talking about a motion sensor on the light? You would have it on all the time but it would only light when you entered the room.

    Trac Off Light?

After having the error codes cleared from repairs on my 2000 venture, when trac off light came back on it showed bad back up light connection, was told the brake light switch was the problem. Do I need to go get that error cleared to get the trac off light to go off after changing the switch?
    Trac Off Light?
Are you sure the sensor is not broken? My husband's car did the same thing.
    Trac Off Light?
I have never heard of a back up light connection issue setting the trac light. Most common on those is a wheel bearing assembly on the front wheels.

The ABS and Traction control is all involved in those mainly. Find a buddy or go to a dealer and ask the front end guy for a quick favor to pull the %26quot;real' codes and ask him what he thinks. Then throw him a ten dollar bill or something. He'll take care of ya.
If the brake light switch is your problem then after replacement the system should run a self-check, if it doesn't see the fault it will either turn the light off and turn the system back on or it will start a counter, and after it runs to self-check X amount of times, different number of times for different faults. it will turn the light off and the system back on

Can I change a LED illuminated switch to light when in the off position instead of the on position (default)?

I have an automotive blue LED rocker switch that illuminates when in the %26quot;on%26quot; position. However, I would like for it to illuminate when in the %26quot;off%26quot; position, and not illuminate when in the %26quot;on%26quot; position. (Exactly the opposite of what it does now).

Is it possible to change the wiring in either the switch or something else in my system to make this possible? Looking at the switch, it doesn't look that easy to take apart.. Just FYI it is part 84841 at Oreilly Auto Parts, Dorman %26quot;Blue LED Rocker%26quot;, 30 AMPS.

    Thanks
Can I change a LED illuminated switch to light when in the off position instead of the on position (default)?
that switch only lights up when power is supplied to it, I don't think you can wire it any differently to work the way you want it to.
Can I change a LED illuminated switch to light when in the off position instead of the on position (default)?
just feed the power line to switch change the teminal
The way the switch is internal wired I don`t think you can do this without the use of a extra relay and a 16 volt diode.

  • How to test a light fixture's wires with a multimeter?

Hi, I've changed electrical outlets and light switches in the past, but this is my first time changing a light fixture, so I need to know how to use a multimeter on the wires connected to the old fixture to check for wires. I found the switch to turn off the power to the light, as when I flip the switch, the power to that light is off even if the switch is on. But I want to make sure it's off using a multimeter. What setting would I have to put the multimeter on, which holes should I connect the black and red leads into on the multimeter, and which parts of the wires should I touch using the metal part of the leads? Will touching the insulation work? Or will I have to take off the wire nuts and make the multimeter touch the part of the wires without any insulation? This is just a regular multimeter, not a neon one or light up one, it has a digital display to show the exact voltage.
How to test a light fixture's wires with a multimeter?
Set your meter on AC 600 volts. Where the light bulb screws in put one meter lead on the side inside the socket and the other lead on the little metal strip at the bottom of the screw in base. With the switch on you should read 120 volts.

To check the bulb with the meter put the setting on continuity beeper and touch the two leads together. You should hear a beep then touch one lead to the side of the bulb where it screws into the socket and touch the other lead on the little metal tip at the end of the bulb. If it beeps the bulb is good and if not it is bad.
How to test a light fixture's wires with a multimeter?
The 200 volt AC range should be sufficient in the US. If you are in the UK, any AC voltage setting above 250 will work. Place one lead on the outside edge of the socket and the other on the tab in the center. With the power off, you should read ZERO. With the power on, you should read about 110 - 120 in the US or 220 - 240 in the UK. Anything more than 10 volts off indicates something is wrong.

We want to change our old light sockets for new ones. Please help,?

we had 3 light switches. The top one controlled the kitchen ,

the second the front room and the third the hall which can also be controlled from upstairs. On removing the 3 switches we found one double insulated single red cable and two cables with both red and black. The switches were also interconnected with black wire. Is the red only wire the mains live? And do they all have to be interconnected to work? And lastly which wire goes where? Thanks for your help.
We want to change our old light sockets for new ones. Please help,?
Your talking about a 3 way switch. At least I am assuming your talking about the one switch for the hallway that can also be turned on from upstairs. That one will have 3 wires on both upstairs and downstairs. Since you can turn it on from both places, you need the third wire to connect it so it turns on from either place. If your uncertain about what to connect, you should have an electrician look at it. If you wanted to trouble shoot it you could take a volt meter and connect it to the wires and measure the voltage. On any of the two you should have 120v across it, but if you have the two blacks it should be 0. You can look at a 3 way wiring diagram located here to get a better understanding of a 3-way switch.

RED RIGHT,,BLACK LEFT THE REST ARE EARTHS WHICH GO CENTER
get an electrician to do it. It is a fire hazard if the wiring is wrong and could void your insurance if you had a fire.
You had better get an electrician if you have to ask. First you have two types of switches. One is a two way switch which has three wires attached. That may be where the red wire comes to play. However Red wires can be hot, but mostly on a 220 line. If you don't get an electrician, you had better number the wires with a tag and place them in the same position they are now. Your single light switches simple have a hot wire leading to them and a wire to the ligt. The 2 way switch has a wire leading to the light on side or end with one wire. On the side or end with 2 wires (one could be red) three wires go to the other light switch, one is hot than one or other is hot coming back depending on the position of the switch.
    GET AN ELECTRICIAN!!!

You risk burning down your house if it is done wrong.

May not trip the circuit breaker but can build up excessive heat resulting in a fire after a while, perhaps after you go to bed or work.

Check for your electricians actual lisc and insurance cert. as many doing house calls do not have them and thus no insurance if the work they do results in a fire you are out of luck.
    Get a spark
There are a number of ways the switch might be wired. It depends on where in the circuit the switch is located.
try not to concern your self with what does what. the wire that connected to all 3 was probably the power or ho needs to go to all 3 sounds like. if ya get lost dint mess with it call some one who knows

    Brake light switch Corsa?

can anyone tell me where exactly the brake light switch is on corsa? Is it easy to locate and change??
    Brake light switch Corsa?
The switch is located under the brake pedal close to the top of the pedal.

Its a bit of a pain to get out as you will have to lay on your back upside down to get at it but once you can get to it all you need to do is unscrew it from the metal bracket that holds it in place.

Before you do this double check to make sure that its not just jammed. This happens a lot as all the fluff from the carpet collects on the switch.

    Ja.
    Brake light switch Corsa?
If you stick your head in the footwell, and feel up the face of the brake pedal from the pad your foot rests on upwards, you'll come to the switch at the top of the pedal arm. Simple to change, you should be able to see if it's secured with a nut or just a 1/4 turn 'bayonet' fixing.
its behind the brake pedal, as you push it down it should click, or it may be stuck on, use a bit of WD-40 if the later is the case.
go the the web bellow and register your vehcile and itll give the info u need ....hope this helps
Its behind the foot brake pedal, and it is at the top, just about level with the dashboard.

I have a bedroom that I lost all electrical-Lights and plugs and in the next room to it has no lights.?

The lights in the bedrom just went out, I changed the light switch and the plug outlets are all new and been working good for at least a year. I checked the other bedroom next to it and everything is working just fine what should I do next. and on a Ome meter what should I have that set on for 110. Thanks

check the fuse box the breaker probably tripped reset it
You need an a/c volt meter to measure voltage. You should have mentiond if you checked the breaker. Set the meter for 110 a/c volts range
Ok, first I just have to say this. Are you absolutely sure that a breaker hasn鈥檛 been tripped? Go back to your breaker box and make sure that you don鈥檛 have a tripped breaker. If that is ok then you need to look inside. When did the problem start? You said that you changed the light switch but when did you do it? If you did it just before your electrical problem then you need to look a how you have the switch wired. If you have had no known problems for a while then you need to look for a GFI. A GFI or Ground Fault Interrupter will sometimes trip. They have a little reset button on them and are typically used around water, like in the bathroom. GFI鈥檚 are outlet receptacles that have a little button between the two receptacles. Make sure to reset any and all FGI鈥檚 that you have around the area where you are having the problem. It is very possible that a GFI has tripped, I know because this happened to me once and my problem and symptoms were exactly like yours. Good luck and I hope it鈥檚 just a little simple GFI reset problem/solution. I didn鈥檛 mean to insult your intelligence in any way if I said things that you already know. I just wanted to make sure that nothing was overlooked.
Check the circuit breakers. Set the meter for any setting over 120 volts AC. Or over 240 volts if you want to check from one breaker to another.

Changed two side by side light switches & accidentally tripped the breaker, now both lights & other not workin?

Changed two side by side light switches %26amp; accidentally tripped the breaker, now both lights and other things don't work.(IE plugs) I have turned the breaker on and off several times and the breaker stays on but I have no power what can i do to fix this. Changed two side by side light switches %26amp; accidentally tripped the breaker, now both lights %26amp; other not workin?
Make sure the bulbs are still good. Check the voltage at the switch with a volt meter. If no power go back to your breaker and check the voltage leaving the breaker. If no voltage then you may have a bad breaker. You may have also burnt up the switch itself. Check voltage incoming and outgoing of the switch.
Changed two side by side light switches %26amp; accidentally tripped the breaker, now both lights %26amp; other not workin?
Check for a loose connection in the switch box you were messing around in. Maybe when you tripped it a wire was damaged or a wire nut is loose.

Edit: Rusty the double breaker he is referring to is most likely a split breaker so there are more circuits available.
You obviously fried a connection somewhere. The breaker should have been off before you started working on the switch. Turn off the main power breaker that cuts power to the whole house. Now check the connection at the breaker that you accidentally tripped. Double check your work with the switches you were working on. You might want to replace them again as well since you have the power already off and what you did before is now questionable.
Sounds like you fried the inside of the switch. The power should not be coming from a double breaker. That would give you 220V at the switches which may be what happened. Somehow there may be two feeds into one box, which is wrong.
Sounds like your switch is fried. Same thing happened to a dimmer switch I was putting in. My dad cut the wires between the switch and light, while the switch was hot, and fried the switch.

  • How do I change the on/off positions of a single switch on a lightswitch?

I want to switch the on/off position of a light switch. I've been told I can unscrew it and put it upside down but I want the other switch to stay the same. How do I go about doing this?
How do I change the on/off positions of a single switch on a lightswitch?
turn it pside down there's . there is no right way .its what you want..single pole either way. 65
How do I change the on/off positions of a single switch on a lightswitch?
Sometimes lightswitches have 3 terminals per switch, a common in and 2 %26quot;outputs%26quot;. The outputs are usually close together. If it's like that, remove the wire from the output terminal that it is in and put it in the other one.
First your going to want to shut off the power if you don't know what breaker the room is, flip the main breaker off. Make sure you do this during the day so you have light to work. Once the power is off remove the cover screws (one on top and bottom of ever switch) With the cover removed unscrew the switch in question (again 2 screws per switch) and turn it 180 degrees then screw the switch back in, replace the cover, and turn the breaker on. Good luck!
Take it out, turn it upside down and put it back in.

If that doesn't work for you, you can reverse the wire positions and leave the switch in its current orientation.

Make sure you turn off the breaker for that circuit before you start removing switches and wires. Shock hazard.
turn it up side down.no problem.BUT if it is a mercury switch.it will not work up side down.if the switch it self has top stamped on it.you must make that the top.good luck.

How to install a convenience switch for a light that also has an electrical outlet?

I have a light in my shed with a regular switch box. I want to change the switch with one that also has an electrical outlet. The problem is that it is old wiring, i.e, the wires are not white or black, so that old black covering on the wire. I have only 2 wires in the current box, and from the instruction that I found, to get a always hot outlet and regular switch, I need 4 wires (2 from the source, 2 going to the light). The %26quot;convenience switch%26quot; has 4 connectors of course, 2 for the switch and 2 for the outlet. How do I install this ? I do not mind if the outlet is control by the switch or if it is always hot, so the easiest way will do. I tried wire 1 in the copper connector of the switch, wire 2 in the copper connector of the outlet, and then connect both black screws (switch and outlet) together: I figure this would create a closed circuit when the switch is on, and this way both the light and outlet would work... it didn''t... Why ?
How to install a convenience switch for a light that also has an electrical outlet?
Only two wires at the switch means no neutral. How about changing the light fixture to one with an outlet on it. For the combo sw. you will need three wires preferable a forth(green or bare) for the ground (goes on the green screw). one hot from the supply, one neutral, one return to the light. The sw. should have a silver screw for the neutral(white), on the same side a brass screw for the return(red) and on the other side two brass screws with a brake off tab between them for the hot(black). If the tab is gone hook the hot to both screws. If you want the sw. to control the outlet, switch places with the red and black wires
How to install a convenience switch for a light that also has an electrical outlet?
Chances are the reason you have only two wires in the box, is because the whoever wired it has just ran a piece of 2 to use to break the hot side. (Bet their are 2 cables running into the light fixture), if this is the case a combo switch outlet won't work in that particular box, you'll need to get a neutral into the box.
The two wires in in your light switch box are the same wire. The white and black wire go from the power source up to the light fixture. The white wire is connected to the fixture and the black wire goes down to the switch and then back up to the fixture. So you probably only have the black wire in you box at the switch. You would need to run the white wire down from the fixture to make you outlet work.
The reason why you only have two wires in the box is because it is a switch leg. In other words, the power is up at the light and the two wires coming down are the hot in and out. That is what you are switching. You need a three wire down so you will have a neutral for your plug. You will have to either fish a new wire up or maybe fish a new 2 wire up from a more convenient location for the plug. Good luck
you said only 2 wires in the current box ( switch box) ?that 2 wires only for hot you know? 1 coming to switch 1 comeout from switch to fixturelingh.I'm sure the source started at the linght ,for that you have to be wiring a new 2-w cable/wg from the fixturelight to the switch box and then connect H , N to outlet and G to the case so connect H down to the switch and then out to the lingh make sure the ringht connection please.
I only read answer #1 and he is correct. The switch is just breaking the hot wire between the source and light, which means that only the hot is going to the switch. You have to get a neutral from the fixture to the switch to get an outlet working in the same box as the switch. Good Luck
if you only have 2 wires in the switch box, then that means the power was ran to the light. The hot runs down to the switch on the white wire and then back to the light on the black wire.....hopefully........meaning that you don't have a neutral at the switch......that's why the receptacle doesn't work. You need to find another power source for the receptacle that you want or you need to pull another romex down to the switch box to provide a hot and a neutral

Where is the abs switch located on 1998 Dodge Durango been told that they why the abs light stays on?
if you have all wheel abs then each brake assembly has it's own sensor - 2 - wheel front or rear abs also applies - before you try to repair or replace take it autozone and have them hook up the tester to make sure that the sensor is actually the problem - you may just need to disconnect the battery for a few minutes to reset the computer module .
Where is the abs switch located on 1998 Dodge Durango been told that they why the abs light stays on?
I dont know about the dodge durango but on my dodge ram the abs light stays on after we change the breaks ourselves. We do it right but the light stays on. Our mechanic says that it is something having to do with the computer that if you dont have the breaks done by a professional the lights will stay on because a professional has to hook the vehicle up to a computer to reset the switch. Ask your mechanic to reset the switch for a fee or just ignore the light if you can. If you havent had any work done to the breaking system recently then I would say that there is probably a problem with your breaking system and you need to take it to a mechanic anyway.

How do I repair a porch light that isn't working? Details below.?

The porch light is suspended from the ceiling of the porch by a cable. It holds 4 bulbs. Even after I change the bulbs (which work on other lamps), the porch light won't go on when I throw the light switch. What can I do? Thanks.
How do I repair a porch light that isn't working? Details below.?
It is either the switch or the fixture itself..Take the fixture off and make sure the two wires are connected(actually 3 to include ground..Hot wire is black, nuetral is white..and the bare copper wire or green wire is ground...I seriously doubt it is a breaker at all for they would not make a dedicated circuit for one simple porch light..there would be more than likely 4 or 5 other plugs and/or lights attached to that circuit..unless you have other items not turning on..it is not the breaker/fuse...If they wired every outlet to a dedicated circuit..you have 40 or 50 breakers in a box..if you could find a service center to hold that many...
How do I repair a porch light that isn't working? Details below.?
It could be any one of several problems. If you have already changed the bulbs, I would then check the light switch. If after testing the switch and finding that it is sending current, then you have a loose connection or a broken wire somewhere between the switch and the fixture. Hope that this helps.
when all else fails check the fuse
The problem could lie in the light, the wire going from the light, or the switch, you could have a loose connection in your box above the light or in the switch box. Hopefully the wire runs from your switch to the light. If you have a cheap voltage tester, it would solve alot of problems. Check to see if you have power at your switch with the switch off. do thid by putting one of the probes on the black (hot ) wire and the other to ground(bare or green wire ) or to the neutral(white wire) If you have power there, check the other wire on the switch the same way. This wire is your switch leg. If you have power there, your switch is fine. If not replace your switch. Next take the light down from the light box. Check for power there, with the switch on. If you have power there, check your wire connections. If they are all tight and good, you have a bad light, If not, get in the attic and follow the path of electricity in till you get power to your light.

    Good luck

I switch off my light last night and it really sparked. I could see a lot of fire like sparks. ?

I then switched it on and it stopped. I have removed the light bulb and will call an electrician but i don't want to be told the wrong thing. There have been no changes to any of the electrics and im thankful i was home and saw it straight away. Could it have caused a fire? Any advise on what it could be please

    Thanks
I switch off my light last night and it really sparked. I could see a lot of fire like sparks. ?
....yes! it could've caused a fire

...did the sparks occur at the light or from the switch?

(see the links below for a picture of what you should see)

....some homes have poorly connected switches and after several years of toggling the wiring falls off and causing sparks

....the wires are probably loose (and they should be inspected)

...if you are not able to check this yourself, ask a nice person to help you out for a moment

...replace the bulb into the light so you can tell when it is off

....turn off the power source at the main breaker box....determine which breaker is assigned to that room and flip it off....then try the switch to be sure the power is off....

....then after you have checked the light again and are sure it is off

    ...with no light or sparks

....then someone can remove the switch cover with a small screwdriver

....and remove the switch box with a screwdriver

....the wires should be visible.....see if they are connected

...see if they are blackened or melted

....if they are loose, you can reattach them easily (securely)

...but if they are not loose, but they appear blackened, then a professional (or knowledgable person) should be consulted before using the light anymore
I switch off my light last night and it really sparked. I could see a lot of fire like sparks. ?
Yes it could have started a fire. Right now, you need to turn OFF the breaker or remove the fuse from the main box(where all your electricity comes into the house). Next, get an electrician.

  • What does the light switch control?

I'm moving into my GF's condo and she has a light switch which does not appear to control anything. I have tested all the outlets with a 3 prong outlet tester and all appear in good working order and do not change when turning on/off the switch. I have tested that the switch and it is hot and receiving current. My next step is to remove the switch and test continuity capacity (i.e. if it is actually turning on and off) once I have found the circuit breaker.......what does this switch control? FYI the building is 6 years old in downtown Chicago and she is the 3 owner. Maybe a overhead %26quot;outlet%26quot; that has been dry walled over?
What does the light switch control?
I would be in line with tipster 鈥?.

Outlets have a break-away tab that will allow one portion of a duplex to remain hot, and the other to be controlled by a switch. When you test the outlets 鈥heck both, upper and lower.
What does the light switch control?
CHECK 1 HALF OF A RECEPTICAL NEARBY THE SWITCH IT'S USED TO TURN ON A TABLE LAMP!
could be light switch for celing fan and not hook up
That switch could be for fresh air ventilation, or even a furnace disconnect switch!

How do I hook up a three way switch?

I have electric to both switches but the light won't turn on. I have changed the light bulb several times and that didn't help. I have also changed the receptacle and that didn't help.
How do I hook up a three way switch?
    Installing 3-way Switches

    From Apply Now,

    Your Guide to Home Repair.

You can turn the lights on here and off over there, and you can do it yourself once you know the trick. It's not exactly simple, but it's far less complicated than most people assume.

There are two important things to remember to make 3-way switches work right. One is that the switches are really single-pole, double-throw devices. That means that one of the three terminals on each switch is always connected to one of the other two. The terminal that is always connected is called the point terminal. It should be specially identified. Most commonly, the screw for the point terminal will be dark and the other two screws will be bright. Toggling - flipping - a 3-way switch changes which of the other two terminals the point terminal is connected to.

To help visualize this, you can think of a 3-way switch as a %26quot;V.%26quot; The bottom of the V is the point terminal and the top of the letter is where the other two terminals are.

Each time the switch is flipped, the wire terminated on the point is disconnected from one of the other two terminal screws and connected to the other.

The other important thing to remember is that 3-way switches come in pairs. It takes two of them, and only two, to make the system work. In addition, three-way switching works because the two non-point terminals on one of the 3-way switches are always connected directly to the two non-point terminals on the other 3-way switch with a pair of wires called the travelers. A three-conductor cable - with or without a ground wire - connects the two switches and carries the two travelers. The third insulated conductor in the three-conductor cable is used as a hot wire or as a neutral, depending on which is needed.

In every 3-way switch system, the ungrounded conductor from the panel - the %26quot;hot%26quot; wire - is connected to the point terminal on one of the two switches. The switch-controlled %26quot;hot%26quot; wire, which connects the switch system to the first controlled light, is connected to the point terminal on the other switch. The grounded conductor - the neutral wire - is not switched. It is carried to the first light and connected there.

There are three scenarios that cover more than 90% of all three-way switch installations. One of these should work for you in a new installation. If you're troubleshooting existing wiring, one of these will most likely be what you are looking at.

Remember to turn the power OFF at the panel before starting. For a new installation, remember to use #12 AWG (American Wire Gauge) wire on a 20 amp circuit. You can use #14 AWG wire on a circuit protected at 15 amps.
How do I hook up a three way switch?
did you turn the power back on? use a tester to read voltage to the light %26amp; switch. the bulb could be just fine. start from the breaker box and find out where the power is first. look up the wiring diagram online ther'll be illistrations you can refrence and it's be a lot easier than trying to figure out what the heck we're saying.
dont no at all. u can ask the retart on top of me hes a nerd
Make sure that there is electricity going to the light. A wire may have come loose, or there could be a break in the wiring going to the light.
    no sure

    Changing light fixtures...?

Do you need to turn off power on breaker panel? Or can you just turn off power switch in room?
    Changing light fixtures...?
It's safest to turn off power at the breaker. However, if you know for sure that the power source goes to the switch box first and that the wiring is done correctly at the switch box so that only a switch loop is running through the fixture box then you could turn the switch off to change the fixture.

This is a big %26quot;IF%26quot; because you never know the experience level or state of mind of who may have wired the light fixture.

On the other hand, often power goes to the fixture box first in which case you should turn off the breaker. Sometimes the wiring is done improperly in the switch box so that one line going to the fixture is hot even though the light in the fixture does not come on. This is common when inexperienced people install multi-way switches (more than one switch controls the light fixture).

You may want to pick up a non-contact voltage tester for around $10 from your local building supply or hardware store to check the wires in the boxes to make sure none are hot.
    Changing light fixtures...?
You might get away with just turning off the switch but it is more prudent to shut off the breaker. In about half of the fixtures the live supply wires first go through the box that has the switch. If so then that would be OK. If however the live wires come in from the fixture and then head to the switch then you would still have live wires at the fixture you are working on.

If you have one of those little AC detectors that buzz in the presence of live wires you could use that to check. But is is much easier to just shut off the breaker.
I would turn off breaker box.
It can be done without turning power off at all, but be safe, turn off the breaker.
Do yourself a big favor and turn off the breaker..switch doesnt always stop it all...plus someone could walk in the room and hit the switch without thinking
The safest is turn the power off at the breaker. There can be unknown voltage to an outlet (especially in older homes) that the wall switch won't stop.
Turn off the circuit breaker to be safe.

If I held a lightswitch in the middle nine times for seven seconds, do I need to change it?

PLEASE READ EVERYTHING PLEASE! PLEASE READ EVERYTHING

I heard a sizzling sound when I held the lightswitch in the middle, when I leave it on (the switch fully up) I hear no sizzling or popping.

Does the light switch need changing?
If I held a lightswitch in the middle nine times for seven seconds, do I need to change it?
no thats the contacts arcing because your really close to closing the circuit but not completely. you just dont do that and it'll be fine.
If I held a lightswitch in the middle nine times for seven seconds, do I need to change it?
What you are hearing is the current arcing which just means the current is jumping in the switch in an attempt to make a connection. If you were able to see it with your own eyes it would resemble a static jump like when you touch a door knob and get zapped. The only difference is you aren't using static, you are making A/C current jump. The switch is fine as well as the surround area. just try not to hold the switch in the middle position because you can cause a little bit of burn marks within the switch, which can hinder or lessen the strength of the connection inside the switch.

Bottom line- you are fine, no worries, just try not to keep doing it.
I would definitely change it. It sounds like maybe the switch is about worn out. You can buy a switch almost anywhere for a dollar or less. Sure beats having house burn down.
No, it's just because it's in the middle. Push it up, and it's fine.
What you're hearing is arcing of the switch between on/off... so why are you doing this?

    change switch
If I held a lightswitch in the middle nine times for seven seconds, do I need to change it?
You were causing it to semi-conduct. Don't do this, it leaves carbon deposits on the contacts. Too much carbon will require replacement, as electricity doesn't travel very well through carbon deposits and may generate heat in attempting to do so. If it stays on when you switch it on, and off when its off without any further sizzling then its ok. Any heat or sizzling is a good reason to replace. Play with yourself, not the switches. :)

I have a problem about 3 months ago with my oil preassure switch. I got that repaired. Now jsut recently the light came on again, but i have 2000 km left until i need an oil change, and i just put a full bottle of oil in. Any ideas?

    Thanks

yes did you pressure test the engine when you had the sensor out? there is a gauge that can read the oil pressure in the block, this is how you make sure there is not another problem better to be safe than sorry good luck

I need help in trying to change a bedroom light fixture?

there are 3 black and 3 white wires. i cannot get the light switch to work. i had to connect 3 black and 1 white to even get the light to come on. but cannot turn it off with switch. help
I need help in trying to change a bedroom light fixture?
It sounds like you are trying to burn your house down. Playing mix and match with the wires. 3 blacks 3 whites, 3 black one white but the switch doesn't work. WTF? Invest in an electrician. That is the best help you can possibly get.
I need help in trying to change a bedroom light fixture?
did you take the old one off? if you did, then try to remember how it was, if not, then, get someone who knows what they are doing to look at it, before you catch something on fire or get shocked.
This sounds like a fixture that is wired for 2 complete and separate lights. It should have 2 whites, 2 reds, and 2 blacks for ground.
If you have 3 black wires and 3 white wires, you have three cables entering the box. One is coming from the main panel. It is carrying the power supply. One is coming from the wall switch. it is the %26quot;switch leg%26quot;. One is taking the power on to the next location that is using it. You need to determine which cable goes where. If you don't know how to do this, it's time to call an electrician.

If you can ID the cables, twist the black wire from the cable that comes from the supply to the black wire that goes to the switch, and the black wire that goes on to the next fixture, and the black wire from the light fixture (4-wires total). Put on a %26quot;wire nut%26quot;. Twist the white wire from the switch to the white wire from the light fixture. (2-wires total) Put on a wire nut. Twist the remaining two white wires together, and put on a wire nut. Tuen on the breaker and test.

There should also be three bare copper wires in the box. Twist those together, and if there is a green wire coming from the light fixture, add that one too. Wire nut.

    Replace all covers. All done.
is there more than one switch for the light? No? Ok. One black wire is hot. since the light works with all three and the white. It will work with one of the black and that white. Remove one of the black wires, does the light work? no? Then that wire is the hot wire. Mark it and the white wire (so you know which they are, like tape).now one white and black pair go to a receptacle and one pair to the light switch. You must first find which wires go to the recepticle, plug a lamp into the recepticle that is working and turn it on. Connect one of the black wires to the hot, and connect one white wire to the white. If the lamp comes on, that is the recepticle wires. If the lamp doesn't come on, remove the white wire and attach the other white wire to the marked white wire. If the lamp doesn't come on, the black wire is part of the switch leg. Bend it out of the way. If the lamp comes on, then you have found the recepticle wires. The other two wires are the switch wires. Of the switch wires attach the white wire to the two black wires already together. Now you have two black wires and one white wire together. Fasten the black (light) wire to the single black wire and the white (light) wire to the two white wires.
If the light fixture has 3 black and 3 white wires, twist all the blacks together and all the whites together so you have one group of blacks and one group of whites. The black wires are the hot leads and white is nutrual. Now in the box in the ceiling , with wall switch off tye the black wires on the lamp to the black wire in the ceiling box. do the same with the white wires. blacks to black, and whites to white. Turn on the wall switch, and if the fixture has a switch, turn it on. you light should come on, if not check your fuse box or breaker box. If it doesn't come on now you will have to replace the fixture switch, you shorted it out when you connected the white wire with the black wires. How a switch works. It has two wires one black and one white. The black wire being the hot wire, the switch opens and closes the circuit when you turn the switch off or on. The hot wire being black is opened as if cut into This is the only function of a switch

Can I change bathroom exhaust fan with a heater?

My mother in law has an old house and has an exhaust fan in her bathroom that also has a heater. e found one at home Depot but my husband says he can't do it. He has changed light switches and fixtures with no problem. Is this harder or is it possible following an online step by step. We have 3 dswitches in teh baathroom. 1. light above mirror 2. exhaust fan 3. light to fan

    Please help!
Can I change bathroom exhaust fan with a heater?
A exhaust fan draws very little power, but a heater will use a WHOLE LOT of power. You will need to do an amp reading on this circuit.

Figure out which breaker the fan is on. Then turn on all the lights and anything else that might be attached to this circuit (ie. like a hair dryer or other thing that gets plugged in)

This circuit might not be just lights and a fan, there might be some receptacles (plugs) that are run off of it as well.

After you have every thing turned on - do the amp reading at the circuit breaker. This is important, you need toknow how much electricity (amperage) you are using.

Next, take a look at the wattage of the heater element your planning on installing - and do the math.

    watts=amps x voltage

or rearranging the formula amps = watts/voltage

for example (1500 watt heater) = (amps) x 120 volts

    amps = 1500watts/120volts

amps =12.5 which is alot of power.

Many residential circuits are only 15 amps. The current electrical code dose require a 20 amp circuit for the bathroom(s). But that one 20 amp circuit may be serving more than 1 bathroom. In older homes you can expect your bathroom to have a 15 amp breaker, and be tied in with almost anything else - like bedroom receptacles and lights.

Odds are you will be fine as there was a heater there before, just don't get a new one that uses more power than the original.

If you need to, you can always just get up into the attic and compleatly remove the old unit and replace it. This would almost certainly be better than trying to find replacement parts for some old broken down fixture.

    Good luck
Can I change bathroom exhaust fan with a heater?
may need to install on more switch for the heater , but depending on how many leads coming from your new fixture, and how many watts the heater is you may need a second circuit from the breaker box and a separate switch for the heater accessory, or another option may be to wire the mirror light and the lite on the fan to operate from the same switch if that switch is in an acceptable location if not than hook the heater up to the switch that operates the mirror lite and wire the mirror lite to the fan lite switch. Good luck
To be honest most exhaust fan motors are super simple to change out. Just two or three screws and unplug and the old one is out. Im not sure your situation but it sure sounds easy to accomplish.

Perhaps your husband is lazy or is simply afraid to fail.

Perhaps more kisses and encouragement will get him to attempt this small challenge. After all reward is part of the game. Its like giving the dog a treat after you get him to shake hands.
Yes you can, some models still have a 3 in one application. Fan, light, and heater. However, a larger hole may be needed for this unit, but the electrical will be fine.

Why has my husband changed his behavior like a light switch?

Since the birth of our first child 3 years ago my husband has been a selfish nightmare. He has not been plugged into our marriage or the girls. We have a 1 year old and a 3 year old, both were his ideas too. He has complained that his life has changed (can't play golf every weekend, etc). He has never helped at night or when a child has a stomach virus. He doesn't like to change diapers and doesn't feel comfortable babysitting until recently. I've started seeing a therapist and I think it freaked him out. Suddenly he is like a super hero. The contrast is day and night. I've asked him why he was verbally abusive to be before hand and he asks why I would even want to bring that up now but doesn't answer the question. It was Jekyll and Hyde - seriously. He was nice but selfish before children. He has been a total jerk since. Once again the second I started therapy he totally turned around. What are the possible causes you can think of?
Why has my husband changed his behavior like a light switch?
Sometimes I have seen in therapy, men who act badly but when the women goes to therapy they are scared they will loose her so what they do is for a short time, act right. but as soon as the women stops therapy they go back to who they really are. I have seen women do the same thing too. Act right when the husband goes to counseling and then act badly.
Why has my husband changed his behavior like a light switch?
    I have no idea

Why are you even questioning this... If he's changed then accept it and work on your relationship
cause when a woman starts going to therapy, she has made steps to correct the things that are wrong in her life. If he is what is wrong? Then it would cost him a buttload of money if you divorced him.
    He feels guilty.

BTW...it's not babysitting if you are the father...it's TCB
He doesn't like the thought of you talking bad about him to a therapist.

At that point he knows that not only are you talking bad about his actions but a professional therapist is most likely agreeing with you and validating your views. probably drives him crazy...
its can't only be your husband what have you done? also you have to consider i know it seems mean to say but that's the truth, ask him or yourself is your relationship with each other working, a therapist and bring him on the spot too, ask him did anythign happen in the last six month that he would like to tell you, with every reaction is from an action,

maybe he just didn't want kids also and feels like he's losing attention from you..or just its too much, some people just don't want kids and its hard to say, ask him also if this is the life that he wanted with you both,
he figured out that you were ready to leave and you might actually get the strength thru therapy to do it. good for you!! stand your ground!
im not sure, but i think having kids might have scared him and made him feel that there was no more of his alone time and so he went on the defensive instead of just accepting and loving the fact that he had children. But once you went to therapy i think he finally woke up to the fact that he was being a jerk and that he has a family to take care of and that he needs to be more giving.
He's changed b/c he realizes that the therapist will make u look internally at what's going on in ur life. If he's a jerk, he's a afraid the therapist will turn him in2 a leper and u won't want anything 2 do w/ him anymore. He's insecure and I would take advantage of that since it's working in ur favor. The truth of the matter is, he luvs u and is afraid he's going 2 lose u. Just roll w/ it.
He's finally banging your sister that he has been dreaming of doing for so long since you two met....Or he's on drugs. I hope this helps.
He got scared. Be happy that all it took was you seeking therapy to wake him up. My husband left me for 6 months and came back like a wounded puppy. We are still working on things and I'm very hopeful.

More men than not go thru this when the children are small. They just don't know how to deal with reality and they think that they should still be able to have as much fun as they want even though they have a family.

Make sure he knows how unhappy you've been and why. Tell him what you expect from him in your marriage and ask him what he expects. The lines of communication need to be set-up now while he is still scared you might kick him to the curb.
If you are that worried about him ask him to join you for a therapy session!
Guys never grow up. Some have arrested development at around 12, some of us others stop our emotional maturity at a later date. You got a 12 year old.

For some reason my the green light that appears on the xbox360 console changes. Now I've only had the system for about two months. The system runs great, and it doesn't turn red - meaning something bad. When it starts up it goes to the upper left corner. I just bought and trying out GTA 4, and for some reason during gameplay this light will switch from the upper left corner to the upper right corner - and back again. It does this once and a while. Can anyone tell me why?

How is changing the date to switch to daylight saving time going to help save energy?

We are springing forward; example 5am will be 6am. It鈥檚 still going to be dark so the lights will be on because the sun does not rise in most places until 7am which will be 8am and most people are already out of their houses to work or school.

And the way the weather is this late in February we should still expect the cold in March, so we will still be heating up homes and buildings
How is changing the date to switch to daylight saving time going to help save energy?
    I agree, it's senseless.
How is changing the date to switch to daylight saving time going to help save energy?
If we do not make this change, then at 5:00 a.m. the sun rises when people are mostly asleep. Then at 5:00 p.m. the sun sets and then we turn on all these lights. If we set the clock ahead one hour, then every head light, and porch light, and parking lot light would be on for one less hour a day.

That would be a lot of energy.
The time change is very important, if we didn't change then children would be going to school in the dark or coming home when it is dark. Some states do not change their times. During the summer we save on electricity due to the fact it stays light until almost 9:00pm. It is the way it is interpreted to others and some enjoy the change and some don't. It does take getting used to when we do change times, but there are always the good with the bad.

Outlet and light on same line. what can I change or attached that will allow me to turn off just the light.?

outlet and light is on the same line. It is an attic bedroom and outlets are limited. Would like to change light fixture to one that would provide me a turn off switch, that can be use to turn off just the light. Is this possible?
Outlet and light on same line. what can I change or attached that will allow me to turn off just the light.?
If your ceiling fixture has an incandescent bulb screwed into a socket, then adding a screw-in socket with a pull chain as suggested will be easy. It also is not difficult to directly wire the outlets at the wall switch. You bypass the switch with the outlet circuit. This will require someone with some electrical knowledge. As always, turn off power before making any electrical repairs. Good luck.
Outlet and light on same line. what can I change or attached that will allow me to turn off just the light.?
The simple and inexpensive solution would be to have your electrician install a pull chain light socket in place of the existing light.
typically the top receptacle of the outlet is switched.check to see if the bottom receptacle still has power when you turn the switch off.

Are my receptacles not working because of bad light switch?

Two of the receptacles in my bedroom are tied to my light switch (they are actually two dials..one controls my ceiling fan and lights and one outlet and the other controls the other outlet). The other night my lamp went out and i thought it was the bulb, but after changing the bulb i realized the outlet was not working. So I moved my lamp into the other outlet and then last night my lights in my ceiling fan flicked on and then got real dim and now that outlet doesnt work either as well as my lights in my ceiling fan and the fan itself. Could is just be because the switch with the knobs on it is bad? we checked the circuit breaker. I have 3 other outlets in my room and they are all working fine...but id really like all the outlets to work and also now I am only using a lamp for light and it's just not really doing the trick.
Are my receptacles not working because of bad light switch?
    These %26quot;dials%26quot; are dimmers?

It does sound like the dimmers both died, but the question is why? Did you plug a heavy load into the outlet? Dimmers are very particular as to load they can handle.

Anyway, get them replaced. If you don't need dimmers, get ordinary switches put in.

    .
Are my receptacles not working because of bad light switch?
This seems like something you will want to fix right away. It could be that one of your switches is bad and will prevent the outlets from working. What worries me though is the lights in your ceiling fan flickering and going dim. That could be caused by a loose connection or a damaged wire. This has the potential to either get hot or cause sparks - either of which can easily start a fire inside your walls. Don't wait just because you are not using the outlets - the heat or sparks could still be getting worse.

Wires can also be damaged through other means such as nailing or drilling the wrong place, rodents chewing on them, weather damage if they are exposed to the sun or freezing, vibration from a motor or fan, too much movement due to a loose electrical box, etc.

I bet you will smoke the same amount.I would try cutting down to a pack a day.Instead of switching brands.
you will smoke more if you switch to lights because the brain thinks hmm well theyre lights we can do more
I have been smoking for about 15 yrs.I started with regulars and switched to lights. When i do get full flavors I smoke just as much.It seems to me like switching to lights is a little better because instead of smoking a pack of regulars a day i smoke a pack of lights. But then i guess its a matter of how much better than lights.I dont believe that changing makes you smoke more.Ciggerettes effect everyone differently.hope this helps
I did and I also noticed I dragged harder. The filters were gross. Plus I've heard they aren't really any better for you.I quit after 24 years. It can be done.
That is very much up to you, isn't it ?
At 2 ppd, I doubt if you would automatically or unconsciously smoke more. But if smoking more was your goal, like if you wanted to smoke 3 or 4 ppd, then switching to lights would help you achieve that goal.

My light keeps turning on and off, is it a short or the switch?

The light will turn on and off and the fan will change speeds..I have one of those switches with all the buttons for high, low, reverse, med, on, off...the light used to just turn on out of the blue and not turn off, but now it turns on and off and the fan changes speeds
My light keeps turning on and off, is it a short or the switch?
It sounds like a faulty switch. You might want to get that taken care of before it becomes a bigger problem.

    Good luck!

try reseting the fuse i had that problem to go to the fuse bock in house and rest

Light bulb blew and now no light bulbs will work in that socket?

I flicked on the light-switch and the bulb went, so I changed the bulb, but the new bulb wouldn't work either. I then tried two other new bulbs, and still no luck.

The %26quot;fuse-switch thing%26quot; (sorry鈥擨 don't know the term) on the box wasn't down, so it's not just a case of putting that back up. Also, I tried putting it down and back up (the one for the downstairs lights), and it still won't work.
Light bulb blew and now no light bulbs will work in that socket?
It could also be your light switch. They are cheap and if the light is controlled by only one switch it is very easy to replace. Switches can some times be hard to test if there is no ground or neutral in the junction box. So if nothing else works just replace it.
Light bulb blew and now no light bulbs will work in that socket?
First thing I'd do if the second light bulb didn't work would be to try that light bulb in a different socket you know is working. That will pinpoint the fixture as the problem.
Ive seen this problem before. You may need a new light fixture. If your renting your landlord will cover the expense and install it.
    Check the circuit breaker.
The lights in my bathroom are connected through a GFI receptacle for the sink. You might try checking any receptacles and plugging in a hair dryer or radio and make sure that the receptacles works, if not reset it and that may fix your problem.

If that does not work then you might look at the base of the light fixture and make sure that the tab is not depressed so much that it is not making contact with the light bulb base. I turn off the power to the fixture and using a stick pry up the tab. That has fixed a couple of such problems for me. The other thing that I will do sometimes is look at the base of the bulbs and if the base center contact does not look like a small dome, I will add solder to the contact to build it up and that will also fix some problems.

The circuit breaker in the box does not always look like it is tripped so your check of turning if off and back on is a good one. Some circuit breakers if you gently try to move it will feel looser if it is tripped.

Check a couple of outlets that the circuit breaker also provides power aand if they work then the circuit breaker is working. If they do not then it is possible that the circuit breaker panel is labelled incorrectly. Check some of the other breakers.

If everything works except the light fixture then either it is defective or the connection at the last outlet has become disconnected. This may work to try and find where the break is, find a cheap AM radio and turn it to a position on the dial that is not a station, when you move the radio near an electrical wire, if it is live you will hear the interference. If you follow the electrical wires then you may find where the break occurs.

    good luck.

I have changed my bathroom lighting ,the lights work but will not switch off?

Either you have a defected switch or you have the wiring done wrong. Have an electrician friend double check your work.
Switch drop is not connected correctly,re- check. Still stuck call a sparks

I want to change an electrical outlet to a switch which will control a light. How?

Since you asked how.. call a electrician or you may be the one who lights up and need controlled.
I want to change an electrical outlet to a switch which will control a light. How?
    Call an electrician....Hellooooooo???
I want to change an electrical outlet to a switch which will control a light. How?
If you're not an electrician please call one. If you think you can, knock the breaker that controls the outlet and the one to the light. Run a 12-2 wire from the outlet to the light (the outlet is or should be a 20 amp circuit, so you need 12-2 wire). In the outlet box connect the original white wire and the new one going to the light together, and connect the two ground wires (they will be plain copper). Connect the original black wire to the bottom of your new switch, and the black from the new wire going to the light to the top of the switch. At the light connect the white to white, and the black to black to black. Be sure to keep the ground wires connected together and to any metal that close to them in the outlets (should be a green colored screw in the box for the ground wire). Be sure to tape any bare connections that originally went to the light
    first that other answer........is wrong

most house wiring is 14 ga. wire and use 15 amp breakers

you cannot connect 2 circuits together, Either you'll get a big bang or a 220 volt line like your electric stove, in which case you'll still get the big bang

    CALL AN ELECTRICIAN

if you really think you can or want to do this contact me by email with more detail and i'll try to help
Unless the outlet is the last junction box

%26quot;upstream%26quot; of the light in question,

and there are no further outlets %26quot;downstream%26quot;,

you are talking about a rewiring job.
I am picturing this switch 16 inches from the floor and you bending over to turn on a light. Kind of funny if you think about it. Is this light on the ceiling or what? They make a switch receptacle combination that fits in the place of a receptacle outlet. It switches whatever plugs into the outlet. Would that work? Not sure what you wish to do.

The other answers you got are downright silly, except for the advise to call an electrician.
    electrician
You need to be more specific in what you wish to do.

Where is the light and is it going to be a new light box and fixture? Or is there an existing light you wish to control?

How high is the outlet and where is this work being done?

Well if you can get into the ceiling above it is easy just get the proper box for ceiling and run a 14-2 up to it. Pigtail the hot wire from the original outlet to the switch and connect the white wire from the 14-2 to the white. Then connect the black wire from the 14-2 to the switch.

    Pretty basic really.

Now if you cant get above, you will need an extention box and conduit up to a box. The best stuff for this is wire mold, but it isnt very pretty.
The outlet is 3 feet high next to a door.I wanted to replace the outlet with a switch-then run a wire to a new electrical box in the ceiling.I have done that part before. The outlet is NOT at the end of a circuit.

  • How to wire a 4 gang, 2 way light switch?

I'm removing all the old sockets and switches in my living room, and changing the sockets hasn't been a problem. Now i've come to the light switches, I've encountered a problem, that the new switches are designed differently to the old ones. SO, I need a bit of help and maybe diagrams on how to wire them up properly.

PS - I'm in the UK, and have the old wires in my house (live is Red, Neutral is Black, Earth wire is Green and Yellow).

Where is the break light switch located?
Could not see the switch in any picture. Look at the third picture, the brake pedal is plainly visible with the black metal brake arm going upwards. The switch has to be somewhere along the arm, get a mirror if the area is too tight to see up. There is a slight chance the plunger type switch is sticking and not releasing in which case a shot of WD 40 might solve the problem.

try this, find your brake pedal then look up the pedal shaft there will be a switch in front of pedal thats you brake switch

Do blacklight bulbs work in lamps that use regular light bulbs?

I'm thinkin about changing all the lights in my living room to blacklights for a party.. do I have to buy other equipment or can I just buy the black light bulbs and then switch the regular bulbs with them?
Do blacklight bulbs work in lamps that use regular light bulbs?
    yes they do !!!!!!!!!!
Do blacklight bulbs work in lamps that use regular light bulbs?
The only thing different about black lights is the coating on the outside of the lamp so just find one that is the right size and all is good.
You better have some flouressent posters dammit!
    yep
If you mean the screw in regular bulbs, the ones they call black light do not work the same as the flourescent tube kind. The bulb kind give off very little UV and don't make things glow like you want. You would be better off to spend the $15 each for the small fixures with blacklight tubes from Lowe's.

The light in my room comes on sometimes i changed the switch and it still does not work right its fluorressant?

Before you spend any more money be sure the fixture is grounded. If it's the type of fixture with the long tubes it must be grounded for the ballast to work properly. If all three wires are firmly connected, check the terminals at each end of the tubes to see if one's broken. Be sure to turn the power off before doing these.
The light in my room comes on sometimes i changed the switch and it still does not work right its fluorressant?
It has to be one of two things either bad bulbs or a bad ballast.

If it is the bulbs they will be black in color on the very ends of the bulbs.

The light in my room comes on sometimes i changed the switch and it still does not work right its fluorressant?
If it's coming on sometimes for no apparent reason it's getting power from a source other than the switch.

See if you can associate the light coming on with the use of switches elsewhere in the house and take it from there. Otherwise call a licensed electrician to check all your wiring.
It's not the switch it is the bulb... Look on the bulb there should be an 800 number somewhere on it, call it, give them serial number of the bulb and they should send you a newer one. I had the same issue with four bulbs, called the manufacturer and got 4 replacements for free.
Either of the first two answers could be correct. If you have the light switch on and the light is going on and off, then either the bulb may be bad or the ballast may be bad. If you have the light switch turned off and it is still coming on when it should be off, then the light either has power coming to it from another source or you did not wire the switch correctly.

I changed the ignition switch in my 99 Pontiac Grand Am, now the security light is on. The car is operable.?

How can I get the light off. I have tried taking the battery cables off and then putting them back on.
I changed the ignition switch in my 99 Pontiac Grand Am, now the security light is on. The car is operable.?
I have an 04 grand am and had the same problem. Turn the key to the on position and leave there for10 minutes with the engine off, this should reset the light. If it doesnt it e=will be a dealer fix. The security feature that light is for is a fuel shut off incase the wrong key is used or if the ignition is popped in a car theft.
I changed the ignition switch in my 99 Pontiac Grand Am, now the security light is on. The car is operable.?
You have to re-learn the VATS. Just turn the ignition on and let the car sit for about ten minutes. Some of these had to have a scanner connected to do an official re-learn. All the computers need is a chance to learn what the right voltage needs to be now that something has been altered.
Your ignition switch is no longer see correctly by the security module. This would be a locksmith fix, the dealer costs way too much.
You may have left off a ground wire, get an OBD-ll scanner and see what turn up, the scanner can also turn off the light on some cars. Other wise you may need to go to the dealership or a lock smith to solve this one. Good Luck and God Bless
At Advance Auto parts they have diagnostics you can use for free. It may help tell what is wrong
Jusseppe has it right. turn ignition to on light will flash after around 10 minutes the light will remain on when you shut it off and turn back on car will start. If you have the right ignition.

Thats a passlock system not a vats as the gm tech stated.
You'll have to have your ignition key reprogramed to match the switch. Take the key to the dealer along with your title and drivers license to show proof of ownership and they will reprogram it.

Why is my tale light fuse keeps blowing out every time i turn the switch on?

It started when one of my tale lights light bulb went out then after changing it then the fuse started blowing out.my truck is a 77 scotsdale chevy 1500.
Why is my tale light fuse keeps blowing out every time i turn the switch on?
pull the wiring harness off the back of the bulb and look inside it if you see corrosion (a green or rust color) then you know your connection is bad. if that is the case you will need to replace it by cutting the wires from the old one and installing a new one. remember to always pack you wiring harness with lithium grease every time you change your bulb this will prevent your contacts from corroding. also if you replace the harness connect the new harness with a wire connector do not use wire nuts or electrical tape as this will most often result in more corrosion at the connection site.
Why is my tale light fuse keeps blowing out every time i turn the switch on?
Remove the bulb and turn your switch back on if it blows your fuse then it sounds like maybe you installed the wrong bulb, make sure it has two prongs on the bottom side of the bulb....
Remove the bulb that you replaced and see if the fuse still blows. If it doesn't, put the bulb from the other side in and see if the light functions properly and doesn't blow the fuse. If this works, replace the bulb with a new one with same exact number as the one that you removed from the other side.

If the fuse still blows, carefully check the socket and associated wiring for a short circuit.
you must have a short in the wiring. probably along the frame because that,s where the wiring runs.

Flickering light, what could be the cause?

I have a hallway light with 2 light switches, one downstairs one upstairs. When the light is on it flickers. The bulbs are incandescent and there are 2 fixtures on the circuit, both flicker at the same time. I have tried replacing the bulbs and the switches but the lights still flicker. When changing the light switches i put a meter on the different leads to make sure there was no power because the voltage detecting device still beeping after i turned the breaker off. The 2 wires that travel between the switches had 10volts on them. I had them disconnected upstairs and downstairs so should be open, I am guessing this is the cause of the flicker but can not figure out how the voltage is getting on the lines. The box at the bottom of the stairs has 3 switches, each switch is on a different circuit. I tried turning off all 3 circuits and the travelers still registered voltage.
Flickering light, what could be the cause?
Not a short but probably a loose wire or faulty switch, a short will blow the fuse. The voltage you are reading is likely to be spurious voltages, I assume you are using a digital multimeter, this is a downfall with them in that they are very high impedance and can pick up these voltages. If you have a low impedance switch on the multimeter use that and the voltages will disappear.
Flickering light, what could be the cause?
sounds like you have a short somewhere in the wiring find what else is on those lines and check them out

    Tempremental flourescent light?

We have a small flourescentb light that sometimes goes on and then sometimes doesn't. It even lights then waits till your in the middle of something and cuts out on you. Have changed light bulb and wall switch....any other ideas?
    Tempremental flourescent light?
I agree with Scot. Change the ballast or the entire fixture.
    Tempremental flourescent light?
sounds like the ballist is bad. basically the power source for the light
Your question sounds like you *might* be talking about just a bulb...with the built-in ballast...not a florescent fixture with a ballast that you can change. If that is the case, and you've changed both the bulb and the switch, then go back further. If this is on a GFCI circuit, maybe the GFCI outlet (or GFCI breaker) is faulty (about $15). If it isn't on a GFCI circuit, then the circuit breaker in the panel is the next step back from the light and switch. If it is breaking the circuit (light goes out), but not tripping the breaker, then you can imagine there could be some bad connection there (wire to the breaker or internal to the breaker itself)...that is dangerous, not just inconvenient...but a new breaker will likely only be $7-$10 and reasonably easy to replace.

What are the long & short term effects of changing the gauge of strings on your steel-string accoustic guitar?

I've recently changed my guitar strings from light to medium and I can feel the neck warping slightly and the frets aren't as easy to play anymore. Is this healthy for the guitar? Should I stay with thicker strings or switch to lighter ones? What other effects will changing the gauge of strings have on my guitar?
What are the long %26amp; short term effects of changing the gauge of strings on your steel-string accoustic guitar?
The higher gauge strings are going to put more tension on the neck of the guitar, giving it a greater forward bow.

Steel string guitars are built with a truss rod (a steel rod that runs beneath the fingerboard) to counteract the tension placed on the neck. Most truss rods are adjustable, and need to be adjusted when changing string gauges to keep the proper amount of neck bow.

Your truss rod simply needs to be adjusted. Since you didn't know this, I wouldn't advise you to try adjusting it yourself, as over-tightening it could permanently damage the neck of your guitar. You could also over-loosen it, causing the rod to detach from the adjusting nut.

Take it to your local guitar shop and tell them that you think the truss rod needs adjusting. They will not charge you much to fix it, and may be willing to show you how to do it yourself.

  • My brake lights won't turn off,is my brake light switch bad, help?!?

I have an 01 Cavalier. My turning signal relay recently had to be changed. After I did that the brake lights came and have stayed on ever since. The only way to make them turn off is to pull the fuse. I believe it's the brake light switch, so how do I change it properly?

I have the new switch but the plastic part that it fits on in the bracket broke when I took the switch out. What is the best way to make my brake lights work right again?
My brake lights won't turn off,is my brake light switch bad, help?!?
if the plastic holder in the bracket broke you need to get another one, then replace your brake light switch, the proper way to adjst it is to pull the pedal towards you then slide the switch into its holder and turn it clockwise, it should lock down. you can get the holder from your chevy dealer, it's possible that you knocked it out of adjustment when you replaced the flasher
My brake lights won't turn off,is my brake light switch bad, help?!?
if he lights are on all the time, it's most likely the switch needs to be adjusted. that can be done from under the dash. there is a nut and screw assembly behind the brake pedal, turn it one way or the other until the lights go off, then tighten the nut down and check to see if they are still on. if they are off then you are good to go, if they are on, then turn it some more once off then you should be OK. good luck ................ email me if you have any more questions.
light stay on yes most likely the brake switch easy fix just look above brake pedal shouldnt even need any tools to replace it one nut one wire about 5 minutes

    Color changing lighting system?

I want to make a lighting system for my room so that when the light switch goes on, one light will turn on, then fade to another light turning on, and basically have my room glow different colors.

Where can I go to learn how to accomplish this?

I do not know where to get these but that effect can be produced by a light with a coloured disk with diferent colours slowly rotating in front of the light

Well, I'm not sure if this is what your looking for. But, try blacklights . there way cool at night! Especially if you put different kinds of things in your room 2 show off different colors that a blacklight will enhance

Why would a light switch flip off on it's own?

I have a regular ceiling fan and light fixture and tonight while I was looking directly at the lamp it turned off - like the power had shut off. I noticed I still had power, so I thought the bulb had blown (even though there was no 'pop' or anything). When I went over to the switch to turn it off to change the bulb, the switch was already in the 'off' position - the light came right on when I flipped it to 'on'. The only other person in the house was taking a bath, so I know it wasn't somebody playing a prank on me.

The bulb in that light is a higher wattage than is recommended (I know - that's not safe and is pretty stupid), but wouldn't any kind of overheat situation throw the breaker? This all just seems very weird that it would flip the switch on it's own.
Why would a light switch flip off on it's own?
    this guy knows
Why would a light switch flip off on it's own?
It's possible that the switch was not fully in the on position and worked back down. If the switch fells like it is loose or moves too easily it is wore out. Otherwise is it a ghost?
Switches can become defective. Have it replaced.
The switch itself has a small spring bar built in that holds the arm in the up or down position by tension. It can just wear out, allowing the switch to turns itself OFF by slipping down. Replace the switch, it is easy to do and not expensive at all. I hope you found this useful

Dimmer switch to ceiling fan light problems?

OK, I have 2, 3 way light switches hooked to my bedroom ceiling fan. one for the light, one for the fan. I purchased a dimmer switch, 3 way 600w, and tried to install it. the common wire (black) went to the only black wire on the dimmer switch. the two remaining wires on the dimmer switch are red. i took one and hooked it to a black wire in the box and the other to the last wire in the box (red) so now i have a black to black (common) red to red, and red to black. and the ground is wrapped around the bare copper wire as per the instructions. so i turn the power on and the light comes on but the rest of the room has no power and the living room sockets have no power (just a few of them) but i turn the light off and the power returns. tried changing the red and black wires but same thing happens. PLEASE HELP
Dimmer switch to ceiling fan light problems?
Check the switches you took out, how many terminals did they have? 2 or 3. If 2, then it was just a single pole switch. The reason your living room is without power is because they had on wire bringing power into the switch box and one wire taking power out carrying on to the living room. That's why when you turn the light on the power returns. Be careful this way because with your dimmer at let's say half power, your living room outlets will only have around 60 volts and electronics really don't like that.

So it looks like you didn't have a 3 way but just 2 sinlge poles. If these are in the same box, they sell ceiling fan dimmers, one half for the light the other slider for the fan.

ALWAYS shut of the power and if not certain, contact a licensed electrician.

    Hope this helps!

First of all, you need to rewire everything that was tied together originally.

A jumper is a short piece of wire used to make a short connection from one type of wire to a device.

You then take a black jumper wire to your switch from the hot wire. It may be black and black or black and red or red and red. Red is considered a hot wire in this situation.

White jumper to the white wire. everything should be powered now.

    Ground to ground (bare)
You need a qualified electrician, and soon. It can cost you your life if you try to do electrics when you aren't sure what you're doing.

  • I have outlets controlled by light switches. I changed the outlets and now they don't work...HELP!?

I have outlets controlled by light switches in the rooms of my house. I changed the outlets and now they don't work. I wired the new outlets the same way that I took the old ones apart - I disconnected one wire from the old and immediately put it in the same place on the new one. Can you please help me fix the problem so I don't have to hire an electrician????

You did not %26quot;split%26quot; the receptacle between the screws on the black(hot) side. There is a metal piece that connects the two sockets of a duplex receptacle. Usually they wire a receptacle to be controlled by a switch so that one socket is on all of the time and one is controlled by a wall switch. If you do not remove the bridge between the two black(hot) wires the switch does nothing and both of the sockets are on all of the time.

You probably have a misconnection somewhere. Take it all apart again and secure them again. All you need is one misconnection for it to not work.
There is a small bridge that runs across the screws. Usually this bridge will be broken by the electrician so that only the lower outlet is connected to the switch. Take a closer look at the old outlet where there is a brass bridge between screws broken or not broken or You might have tripped the panel. Reset all the circuit breakers . They should work. Change the bulb
It depends upon how many switches control your lights... 3-way switches control power to a light from two separte points...4-way switches control power from 3 separte points. Single pole is used for single light...If you don't use these types switches it will get messed up...
    you should call an electrician.
sometimes wire nuts get loose once you try pulling them out of the box. you may want to examine the wire nuts. check the copper jumper on the side of the receptacle, ensure both (hot and neutral) are intact, sometimes they' cut to separate another line from another source.
is your homeowners policy paid up. sounds like your gonna need it if you keep going the handyman route.
    Since you note : %26quot;I wired the new outlets the same way that I took the old ones apart - I disconnected one wire from the old and immediately put it in the same place on the new one.%26quot;

    You likely wired it correctly.

So, the wiring is correct, however, you didn't prepare the outlet correctly.

Just under the hot-wire (bronze) terminals/screws of the outlet, you'll see that both screws make an electrical connection to themselves by a small (snap-off(able) connection.

You need to snap this off to break that electrical connection -- otherwise the switched wire will not control the light -- it will be controlled by the other hot-wire attached.

Of course this assumes conventional wiring -- either top or bottom outlet being always %26quot;on%26quot;, and the other, controlled by the switch.

    Good luck
