Dimmer switch to ceiling fan light problems?

OK, I have 2, 3 way light switches hooked to my bedroom ceiling fan. one for the light, one for the fan. I purchased a dimmer switch, 3 way 600w, and tried to install it. the common wire (black) went to the only black wire on the dimmer switch. the two remaining wires on the dimmer switch are red. i took one and hooked it to a black wire in the box and the other to the last wire in the box (red) so now i have a black to black (common) red to red, and red to black. and the ground is wrapped around the bare copper wire as per the instructions. so i turn the power on and the light comes on but the rest of the room has no power and the living room sockets have no power (just a few of them) but i turn the light off and the power returns. tried changing the red and black wires but same thing happens. PLEASE HELP

Check the switches you took out, how many terminals did they have? 2 or 3. If 2, then it was just a single pole switch. The reason your living room is without power is because they had on wire bringing power into the switch box and one wire taking power out carrying on to the living room. That's why when you turn the light on the power returns. Be careful this way because with your dimmer at let's say half power, your living room outlets will only have around 60 volts and electronics really don't like that.

So it looks like you didn't have a 3 way but just 2 sinlge poles. If these are in the same box, they sell ceiling fan dimmers, one half for the light the other slider for the fan.

ALWAYS shut of the power and if not certain, contact a licensed electrician.

Hope this helps!

Read this web site first.

First of all, you need to rewire everything that was tied together originally.

A jumper is a short piece of wire used to make a short connection from one type of wire to a device.

You then take a black jumper wire to your switch from the hot wire. It may be black and black or black and red or red and red. Red is considered a hot wire in this situation.

White jumper to the white wire. everything should be powered now.

You need a qualified electrician, and soon. It can cost you your life if you try to do electrics when you aren't sure what you're doing.
