Is it safe to use a 3 way electrical switch in place of a regular electrical light switch?

I need to change out a broken wall light switch and I have a 3 way switch that is new in the box. Is it safe to use? Also, what is the difference between a single pole and a double pole switch? Is there a triple pole switch?

Yes you can. Attach one of the wires to the marked terminal and the other wire to either of the other two terminals. But I agree with ever one else, just go by a new snap switch.

I don't know where the person lives that has to pay $4.00 for a 3 way switch..I just bought a box of 6 for $4.79 at Home Depot in NY. You are only saving pennies by getting a regular switch...it'll cost you much more in the gasoline it takes you to get to the hardware store...these people are crazy.

Just go the hardware store and buy a 69 cent switch.. A threeway is a waste.. You can use it but it's worth a bit more money (like $4.00)..
i also think you should just go and buy a new single pole single throw switch. they are cheap and not as confusing as a 3 way

if you are doing it yourself. also a single pole switch differs from a double pole switch in that a double pole uses another separate leg of power

this would be used for 220v. and I'm not sure about a 3 pole toggle switch but a breaker is kinda the same thing.
I agree w/the other answers as far as purchasing a cheapie because, so you know, a 3way is used when 2 switches control 1 light such as a light in the stairway....actually, in alot of places it is code.
