A ceiling light is not working. I've changed the switch, the light bulb holder, and the light bulbs. But no go

There are 2 wall switches side by side. 1 works, but the other doesn't. Is there anything else I can try before calling in a professional electrician? Thanks.

Have you rechecked the wires on the bulb holder( socket),

these wires are small and will slip out of the wire nuts

The switch that is not working , take the wires off and put them together no wire nut just touch them , ( power off ) then turn power on, if light works new switch if not make sure you have new bulb,

if they don't work take the bulb to another socket and try there, if they are good and switch is good you have wiring problems

Hi. If you have a meter, try reading power at the switch. Also check your circuit breaker panel, you may have a faulty breaker. Reset it and try the light again. If those don't work, you my have a broken wire leading to that switch. Corrosion can cause this.

If you have two switches one will control the outlets the second should control the light.go to your local diy and get a cheapo circuit tester.then go home trip all your breakers,because if its a normal house nothing is marked right then get your step ladder out take down the fixture be sure to separate the wires attach the circuit tester tape it on if you want the trip the breakers again if you have juice coming there the tester will light.If it doesn't check for another switch if not the case replace the switch in the wall while the power is OFF
You need a mutlimeter to work with electricity. Just guessing and changing parts probably will not solve the problem.



The first test would be to check voltage at your light switch. Check to see if voltage is present between one of the hot wires and neutral or ground. If no power check your breaker or fuse.



If power is present, check for power at your light. Here to need to check between hot and neutral and hot and ground. This will determine if you have power and if you have a neutral. If power is present then you either have a loose connection, broken wire, bad light bulb or the center tap of the socket is pushed in too far. This happens from overtightening light bulbs.



If no power is present at your light, then the problem is probably a bad switch, loose connection or broken wire between the light and switch.

Switch off the main power supply first. Then take a new wire %26amp; directly connect it from the switch to the holder, if its working then the internal wiring is faulty. If still it doesnt work then its sure the power supply is not coming from the switch.

Now connect the same new wire to the working switch if it functions okay, remove the new wire %26amp; connect the old concealed wire (in the wall) to that switch. Only problem will be that one switch will be used to operate 2 lights.
