I have had new light switches bad already. How many wires are you dealing with ? is it a three way?

it could be a three way and you put a 2 way in or the other way around. Three way switch will not have on and off written on them

If it is only 2 wires and maybe ground then desconnect the switch cap both wires or make sure they are not touching anything and turn then breaker back on. Is the light still on? it should be off. its its not then you have a problem. if its off then touch the 2 wires together or play it safe and turn the breaker off and wirenut them together. the light should come on. if it does then the switch is bad.

T, I need to know what color wires you have available at both locations, at the switch box and at the ceiling box which is in all likelihood is an octagon box. It sounds to me like both may have been wired with two hot wires (black and red) to facilitate a fan/light combination that would utilize one un-switched (black) for a fan and another switched (red) for the light switch-leg. It could be that you only need to cap off the black wire you used with one wire nut and simply wire nut the lamp's black wire with the red wire from the box, if it is the red wire from one side of the switch itself.
the problem is that the hot is made up to the switch leg, check the wiring at the light. Your hot wire should come to the switch and make up on the bottom of a single pole switch. and the switch leg should go from the top side of the switch to your light. is this a house or a business ? and can you switch this light from only one location or is there more than one switch ?
You need a hot (Black) and one white wire going to the switch. Another hot (Black) and a white wire going to the light. Connect both white wires at the switch and cap and tape them. Connect each of the black wires to the switch. One at the top and one at the bottom. This should work for you. Good Luck
u wired it wrong,i agree with the other person, redo it and start from scratch, also there is a book i got, wiring for dummies,it has helped me lots.
