A plug in light changed to a light switch?

I have a 4ft shop light that plugs into an outlet. Can i cut off the plug part and wire it up to a light switch? The light has 12G wire with 20 amp breaker. The shop lights wire is not solid like the 12g wire.

Will this work and do i need to go all the way to the ballast with the 12g wire?

Thanks

Yes you can go with 12 g wire, its not any bad in that. You can also save your electricity bill from the following site. Please check it out.

for a light all you need is 14 G. try putting it in conduit.
I would not recommend that.

However, you can replace the outlet with one that has a switch on it.

You can also get a NEW 4 foot shop light (2 bulb model) that is designed for ceiling or wall mount for under $20. Maybe under $10 if you shop around...
Yes, turn off the power, via the breaker and run the wires into the box. Secure the whites together with a wire nut. Twist the black wire strands tightly and run the strands around the bottom screw.

(The wire gauge inside the cord that is attached to the ballast inside is already the correct size).
