Why would the one plug and a light switch in room stop working when all others work?

I plugged in a rent a carpet cleaner into the same plug. I smelled burning, now the plug and a light switch dont work . All others in the room work and I checked the gfci or gcfi plugs. I also changed the plug and light switch, they still do not work.

You have an open wire between the outlet and switch and the electric panel. The carpet cleaner burned a wire off somewhere.

broken ground wire between the outlet that is working and the switch and the outlet that are not working
Sounds like you also have the wrong size fuses in for that circuit. The fuse should have tripped before the switch and the plug stopped working
Remove the receptacle cover and check the power coming to it with a tester hot to ground and hot to neutral you should read 120 volts if you dont you have to back track to find the problem.Call an electrician if your not sure how.
Check all the outlet's in the room.The feed side has shorted on one of the other outlets.
that means the carpet cleaner has a short and is bad, and when you replaced them did you go outside or wherever the fuse panel is and check it to see if you tripped a breaker. if nothing else works then you have the wires hooked up wrong or your wires are fried.

get a vac/dc tester and see if your getting power to the wires with the breakers on, if you checked them already
