Will changing my dimmer switch allow me to convert to CFLs?

I have a room with about 7 wall mounted lights on a single circuit, with an OLD dimmer switch. Regular CFLs don't work with dimmer switches, and the new %26quot;dimmable%26quot; CFLs generally only work with NEWER dimmer switches. Since we don't USE the dimmer at all and I have a TON of free CFLs from Yahoo Answers, can I just replace my dimmer switch with a normal ON/OFF switch and then use the CFLs? Or is there still a problem because there are 7 of these lights on one circuit? Anybody know?
Will changing my dimmer switch allow me to convert to CFLs?
Yes.

The average light switch and corresponding circuit is rated at 15 amps. To see how many CFLs it will handle, first compute the total watts the circuit is capable of by multiplying 15 (amps) times household voltage, 120 volts (assuming you're in the USA). That gives you a maximum load potential of 1800 watts available for that circuit. Then, add the total (actual, not equivalent) wattage of the CFLs you intend to use. Let's assume you're using a CFL with the equivalent output of a 100 watt incandescent bulb. The actual power consumption for a 100 watt equivalent CFL usually runs between 23 and 30 watts. Let's assume 30 watts (worst case scenario). Let's also assume you have 10 sockets instead of 7, for ease of computation. 30 watts times 10 bulbs equals 300 watts. Given these data, you could run 50 more CFLs off that one circuit. Compare that to 18 100 watt incandescents and you have a pretty good idea of the power savings of CFLs. And this doesn't even take into consideration the room heating that takes place with power hungry Edison bulbs.

The only drawback I've found with CFLs is their ballast (the electronics in the base) makes them somewhat frail when compared to incandescent lamps. They don't like confined spaces. The electrolytic capacitors and other electronics can suffer from heat build up. So, use them in an open fixture only.

I'm pretty sure that footballs will not make your house any brighter

The CFLs should be fine, but check the wattage of the CFLs and the bulbs in the current configuration to make sure you don't overload the circuit. Some bulbs are only 25 watts, which can be less than some CFLs. Since you have seven bulbs on one circuit, the total power could potentially overload the circuit.

If everything checks out, then go ahead, change the dimmer to a conventional switch and install the CFLs.
Yes, you can replace the dimmers with standard on-off switches, and that will keep the CFL's happy. The switches cost about half a buck each, and installing them is trivial. You may need new wall plates as well as switches. As for the previous response, if you are using CFL's where incandescent lamps once were, you aren't going to overload anything.

Tempremental flourescent light?

We have a small flourescentb light that sometimes goes on and then sometimes doesn't. It even lights then waits till your in the middle of something and cuts out on you. Have changed light and wall switch....any other ideas?
Tempremental flourescent light?
I know exactly what your problem is..........somewhere on the assembly there is a round silver thing (starter) that you simply unscrew and replace. You can buy them almost anywhere
Tempremental flourescent light?
If it is an ballast type fixture (one with the long, tubular bulbs) the ballast could be bad. Take it in to Home Depot or Lowe's. They will set you up with a new ballast. These are super cheap, but are often a problem in older florescent fixtures.
It has either a ballast or a starter, and it's going bad. If it's a ballast, it's located under a metal cover inside the fixture.

If it's a starter, these are just a small cylinder that pop or screw into a small receptacle and are usually located somewhere just under the light bulb.

Starters are as simple as a light bulb to replace and only cost .50 or so.

Ballasts can be just a few dollars or as much as $25 for a large light and need to be wired in. Be sure to turn off the breaker for that light before you do it.
Many of the smaller flourescents have starters. Your issue sounds like the Ballast (transformer). It is more cost effective to replace the fixture than to try and pamper the old one.

If you are determined to attempt to repair it, the ballast is under the cover which will either be held on with screws or snap into slots. Turn off the switch and put some tape over it to avoid accidents. Remove the ballast and take it to Home Depot. They have a great selection but you may even end up at a specialty lighting store. Put the new one just like you took the old one out. The colors should match up on the wires but if not there should be a wiring diagram with the new one.

Good Luck!

  • Why is my head lights not working properly?

I have a 98 dodge durango my head lights are going on %26amp; off i changed light switch and now only head lights work no back running lights what could be the problem b4 i changed light switch all other lights were working properly
Why is my head lights not working properly?
Either the headlight switch is bad, you have the wrong switch,or there is a problem with the wiring. The headlights are on a circuit breaker that will reset automatically when tripped. The tail and dash lights are on a different fuse. Something is causing a short circuit, and this is tripping the circuit breaker!

Check your fuses to see if the tail light fuse is blown. I would also look at the new switch, and the wiring to find the problem!!

    Good luck!!
Why is my head lights not working properly?
Sounds like the daytime running light module is malfunctioning
clean battery cables and post. make sure that you have a good neg.ground at battery's neg post.
Good chance the daytime running light module is the problem......... disconnect and then try.
its why ARE my headlights....... sorry mom was a English teacher. go over all the electrical connections one by one...sometimes they get green corrosion on them.
First check the fuses for your headlights and taillights to be sure a short did not blow them, it could be that you installed the light switch incorrectly. Check the placement of the wires and make sure that they are on correctly. Then look for any obvious shorts or exposed wiring that may cause a short, not just under the dash but all along the wiring system.

    problems

    1. the dash light (the one behind the speedometer) blinks on and off .

    2. When its decides to stay on the car is soo old that the light is not bright (even when I adjust the interior lights with the knob)

    3. I really need to know how to take off the light switch knob (It is in the way of me taking off the dash pannel.

you need to get behind the bezel, there will be a button on top of the switch, or side. You need to pull the headlight knob out and then push the button down and then pull the knob all the way out. Then remove the nut behind it. Best to do this with the battery disconnected or the headlight switch unplugged

Diplomat 620 select oven stop working .When i switch on the oven there was no light inside,no heating.?
You probably have a bad breaker, most 220 V breakers pick up 110 V from two sources in your breaker box. Even though the breaker is closed one contact could be open. This would let power go to your LEDs and fan but not supply the necessary voltage to power your oven's elements. This would be the simplest and least inexpensive fix. Hopefully this is all that's wrong.

Is it safe to change the light bulb?

The light bulb at the entrance to my block of flats needs replacing. The light is one which automatically switches on when it gets dark. Normally when I replace a light bulb, I'd make sure that the light is switched off at the time. However, I can't see a switch for this one. If I change the light bulb during the day (when it would have been off anyway) is that just as safe?
Is it safe to change the light bulb?
No, its not as safe. Something inadvertently covering the light sensor would cause the light to go on.

Find the breaker for the circuit the light is on and turn off the power there or have the landlord do it for you.
Is it safe to change the light bulb?
    Not your job.
    I'm sure it is

    But anything can happen

    So be carefull:)
Ask an electrician. Not to replace the bulb, but just for the answer.
Yes, its fine to change a light bulb with the switch on.
Of course its safe during the day, you are not going during the night.
    yes
Use Caution but i'm sure that you will be fine.
as long as the light is off its fine. :)
It's probably 'on' all the time, with a light sensor. It's fairly safe to change so long as you don't touch the casing, or aren't grounded. But I'd guess there's some communal area where the meters and phone points enter the building and that's where the switch will be.
report it to your landlord, it's his responsibility
just don't touch the contacts. its not difficult. or wear big rubber gloves.
i say yes---just don't stick your finger in the socket or use any thing metalic. i would put a piece of cloth around the bulb
    Yes. You'll be ok.
Assuming that the fixture is not broken and that there aren't bare wires or bare electrified metal present (as there might be if a ceramic socket has been cracked) you should be safe. Just don't stick your finger into the socket or touch the metal base of the bulb while you are screwing it in.
It can be done 'Hot' quite safely.

Even if it's off, treat it as though it's 'live'.

Only hold the glass part of the lamp, (bulb),

and hands off the fixture while you're touching the lamp.
The first rule in electrical safety is never take a shock intentionally. This means if there is a possibility of testing for the circuit to be hot, it should be done before touching. Find someone with electrical knowledge first. Be safe.
As long as the glass isn't broke you can change it any time. If it's broke, then turn off the switch or the breaker.
first switch off the electricity please,or you will get hurt~
All these morons saying it's just not safe is ridiculous. Just change the lamp Honey, you'll be OK.
OH Jesus, just change the damn bulb already ..willya..geeeez.
if you are with the council have them to replace the bulb just in case someone has not installed it properly your safety is first, tell the council that you nearly fell (lie) and the will be out quicker if they think that you might claim against them.

you can change the bulb but it might not be a standard bulb that you have in your house, and again you don't know how the fixture has been installed properly.BE CAREFUL!!
The fuses for this light are most probably in a cupboard on the ground floor which is kept locked. It is a job for the landlord or the estates manager.
it is the landlords job to replace the bulb, but in the day the fitting should not come live. not your job though

A room has 100 light switches, numbered by the positive integers 1 through 100. There are also 100 children, numbered by the positive integers 1 through 100. Initially, the switches are all off. Each child k enters the room and changes the position of every light switch n such that n is a multiple of k. That is, child 1 changes all the switches, child 2 changes switches 2, 4, 6, 8, 鈥? child 3 changes switches 3, 6, 9, 12, 鈥? etc., and child 100 changes only light switch 100. When all the children have gone through the room, how many of the light switches are on?
A room has 100 light switches, numbered by ................?
    10.

    1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100
A room has 100 light switches, numbered by ................?
    99.

Basically if Child 1 enters, changes all even numbers, 50 switches are on.

Child 3 enters, switches all odd numbers, 100 switches are on ( ODD + EVEN )

Child 100 turns out one switch ( 鈩?100 ) so that 99 Switches are now on.
