i was changing my light switch today an there wasnt no ground wire for the old switch an when i tried to bring some ground wire it was too short to get on the screws. so i just left it alone
Do you have to have a ground wire on the light switch?
Some switches come equipped with a ground screw, It is a good idea to use it if provided especially if you have a metal switch cover as both the black and white wire are hot at times if one comes into contact with the metal plate and you have no ground on the switch you could get a shock. I always use them when provided and try to buy them when given a choice.
Do you have to have a ground wire on the light switch?
Most (UK) light switches don't have an earth connection, or they just have a terminal where earth wires can be joined. You only need to earth a metal switch since a plastic one presents no danger of electric shock.
My husband does electrical work and construction and said you do not have a ground wire all you have is hot and neutral and your neutral acts as your ground wire. black is hot and white is neutral
Lights do not require a ground wire. Appliances or anything with a motor does.
Black is the Hot wire. White is neutral. Its ok to just have the two.
